Yūji is a first-year student in the Muroe High kendo club.
Yūji is a kind and upbeat person who is willing to help anyone who asks. Since he has more experience than most of the other members he often helps teach and supervise them. He has great skill and is almost on par with Tamaki Kawazoe. Despite this, he is rather humble.
When in stressful situations he knows how to stay calm and collected, shown when a group of gangsters threatened to attack him. Even though he was panicking on the inside, he put on a tough face and used intimidating words to make them back off. He also has considerable academic skills since he scored fourth in the regional exams.
While he would never think of complaining, there are moments where he seems to wish that the girls and boys weren’t so separated during training. Though he hides it well, he is a little disappointed that the girls get more recognition. At times he even appears to be feel somewhat lonely; Toraji Ishida focuses nearly all his attention on training the girls and Danjūrō Eiga is usually cheering on Miyako Miyazaki, leaving Yūji alone often.
He is completely clueless when it comes to romantic affairs. Despite there being hints that he may like Tamaki or vice versa, he does not seem to realize them. However, they are shown to be close enough that he can notice when something is wrong with her, such as when she sprained her ankle at the preliminary tournament. They are good friends and have known each other for a long time.
He attended the Kawazoe dojo when he was younger, which is how he met Tamaki. In junior high he was in the kendo club and was in the top five at the prefectural games.
- He is good at calligraphy.
