Sayako Kuwahara (桑原 鞘子 Kuwahara Sayako) is a second-year in the Muroe High kendo club.

Personality[]

Sayako is a spontaneous person who is constantly searching for her calling in life. She switches between hobbies and interests at the drop of a hat, usually because she becomes discouraged from her progress in it and believes it’s not for her. The only things that she has stuck with are kendo and writing.

She has a large imagination and that, coupled with her passion for writing, tends to cause her to make up dramatic stories. For example, she gave a melodramatic explanation for why Satori Azuma might have quit kendo. Sometimes she’ll end up staying up all night writing, though writer’s block seems to be a reoccurring issue.

When she fails badly at something or becomes heavily discouraged, sometimes she will go into slumps where she will skip school and sulk in her room for days. She can be rather pessimistic and thinks in extremes, so it’s not uncommon for her to say she wants to die after failing something. She finds that bike rides are good to help clear her head and bring up her mood.

Despite all this, she is a bold and outspoken member who helps Kirino Chiba watch over the rest of the club. Sayako and Kirino have a strong friendship. If something is wrong with one of them, the other will know. Sayako is the only one Kirino seems willing to confide her troubles to. Also, Kirino knows how to handle and understand Sayako’s moods.

In the beginning of the series she is decent at kendo, but after a lesson from Tamaki Kawazoe on her footwork she becomes a much more formidable opponent.

Background[]

Kirino Chiba and Sayako met and became friends sometime in elementary school.

In high school, they both joined the kendo club. However, Sayako was absent often since she became discouraged easily for various reasons.

Trivia[]

  • The name Sayako means "sand" (沙) or "thread, silk" (紗) (sa), "also" (也) or "night" (夜) (ya) and "child" (子) (ko).
    • The kanji "耶" is an interjection.
